For a Moldvay B/X D&D adventure I ran recently set in a flooded dungeon at the roots of the world (I’ll post the map soonish), I wanted something sneaky and wet and of variable power to be used as the villains. I was going for something akin to the Kuo-Toa.
Toads (Racial Class)
Requirements: Dex 9
Prime Requisite: Dex
Hit Dice: D6
Max Level: 8
Toads are stealthy, unpleasant froglike humanoids who worship water deities and elementals. They prefer to live in wet environments and must submerge their whole body in water at least daily or they suffer the loss of 2 Constitution points per day (recovered at a rate of 1 point per day once they are able to wet themselves again). Toads can hold their breath for one minute per point of Constitution (assume 1 full turn for the average toad). If using the AEC / 1e rules, toads can multiclass as monks, rangers and clerics.
Toads cannot use armour or shields but can wield any type of weapon.
