Getting bored of the daily 100×100 geomorph?
Don’t worry, I’m not blaming you.
After six weeks of the Mapping Challenge, it is time to take a break for a month or two. So check back in later this week for the Friday Map (not geomorphic, I promise!)
But the geomorphs will be back. I need at least 100 of them for my random dungeon generation system, so I plan to go back to this topic in a few months and draw up twice as many as I’ve posted so far.
In the meantime, check out the cool stuff that’s been done with them!
Rob Lang of the awesome Free RPG Blog created a random geomorph dungeon designer that takes the geomorphs and builds a dungeon out of them.
Over at D&D With Porn Stars, Reverend Keith posted an awesome map built using my geomorphs and a touch of photoshop to adjust them to suit his needs.
And here I was looking forward to week 7…
I’ve printed out all 6 weekly maps so far, and they’re about to see duty in the second level of one of my dungeons
Keep up the good work!
I’m enjoying them, myself. But I can see how they might become tedious to make.
What are you using to make these? Is it straight pen and paper and then scan them in? Or do you have some kind of drawing tablet for the computer?
All the maps on the site are drawn in black pen on either white paper or graph paper, scanned, contrast-enhanced and posted as-is. No pencil work, no first drafts.
Bored? Your work is fantastic!
I also was the reverse of bored. Thanks for these great tiles!
Rob Lang’s generator shows that just 12 tiles can be turned into some insane dungeons, so at 50 you’ve already got great source material here.
I have to agree with the other posters. I was in map-lover Heaven for the past 6 weeks.
But I can see why you want to rest; doing ANYTHING for an extended period of time can wear on you.
I just tell myself that you’re taking this time to refresh yourself and it will result in you giving us even better maps (if that’s even possible!) in the future….
Yeah, not board. On the other hand, there is nothing like a little anticip……
ation!
I’m going to say thanks for the kind words on behalf of the map generator but the hard work really is being done by Dyson.
For the latest batch of building-related tiles, I might have to make use of my PhD and do a clustering algorithm. This is so that you get clusters of buildings, rather than having them dotted around.
The other two features I’m going to stick in is scaling and a grid behind the maps.
A question for your readers…
How many squares is each map across?
10*10 10ft squares oldschool equals 20*20 5ft squares new miniature one inch grid…
The geomorphs are very sweet! I’ve been inspired to do a mapping project of my own in the new year. keep them coming!
Fantastic work – very inspirational.
You might want to include some 100×200 geomorphs. Another option would be to divide the Geomorphs into man(dwarf?)made tiles and natural caves.
I’ve thrown together my own version of Rob Langs dungeon generator: http://www.pulven.net/randomdungeon/
This version is hardcoded to only show a 3×4 dungeon – whats different from Rob’s version is that each tile is rotated randomly
